Curio cabinets have been around for centuries in one form or another. These types of cabinets were very popular in Victorian England when people were eager to display rare and exotic finds from their travels. The designs of the cabinets were often very intricate and ornate. Curio cabinets now come in all styles and sizes. Modern shapes include triangle cabinets as well as units that have glass on four sides so they can be placed in the middle of the room. Some curio cabinets can be hung from walls or placed in corners if the room does not have enough space. Usually quite tall, many curio cabinets reach almost to the ceiling.

The cabinets are constructed mainly of glass and are supported by a wood or metal frame. Front and side panels are made of glass and the glass shelves are fully adjustable. Modern designs often feature a mirrored back and lighting to show every detail of the displayed items. Items inside the curio cabinet are protected from dust and damage. Curio cabinets are used to display everything from rare artifacts to fine china. The cabinets have glass panels from the top to the bottom and generally do not have hidden compartments or drawers. These cabinets are different from display cases since they allow the items to be viewed from all angles whereas a display case is meant to be viewed from the top only.
